Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has laid the foundation stone for a landing site and fish market construction in Chato district, Geita region.
The projects aim to enhance the local economy, with a focus on involving fishermen and farmers in development plans. During his one-day visit to the district, the Prime Minister highlighted the government’s commitment to empowering the fishing community.
He emphasized that the initiatives will provide opportunities for both existing and aspiring individuals in the fishing sector to boost their income. The Prime Minister encouraged residents to make full use of the projects to improve the local economy. The 1.75 billion TZS project includes key facilities like a modern fish market, a building with a fish drying machine, an ice production plant, and cold storage rooms for fish preservation.

Chato legislator, Dr. Medard Kalemani, emphasized the government’s support for the people. He stated that President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration has allocated funds for development projects in Chato District, including 6.7 billion TZS for fishing activities.
The Project Manager, Engineer George Kwandu, mentioned that completing the project will decrease fish losses post-harvest, particularly dagaa. It will raise the value of fish products and boost government revenue collection. The project’s completion is set for August 2, 2024. Engineer Kwandu highlighted that the market will improve fish trade, enhance food security, and create 1,473 job opportunities for fishermen, traders, and other stakeholders.
