Hon. Mizengo Pinda, Head of the Southern African Development Community Election Observation Mission (SADC-SEOM), convened a meeting with tribal chiefs from various communities in Botswana on October 27, 2024, in Gaborone.
This meeting is part of SEOM’s efforts to engage with key stakeholders involved in the electoral process in the country.
During the meeting, Hon. Pinda provided an overview of the mission’s role in overseeing the upcoming general elections in Botswana. He discussed the current preparations and the state of affairs leading up to the elections, emphasizing the need to adhere to the democratic principles and guidelines established by SADC.
Pinda pointed out that SEOM has been actively meeting with different stakeholders to gain a comprehensive understanding of the election process and its preparations. He assured the chiefs that observers have been deployed across all electoral districts to monitor the situation before, during, and after the elections.
Chief Gaborone, representing the Batlokwa tribe, addressed the attendees, emphasizing the chiefs’ responsibility to maintain unity within their communities, regardless of their constituents’ political affiliations. He underscored the importance of fostering peace and security in their regions.

Moreover, Chief Gaborone highlighted the role of traditional leaders in encouraging citizens to participate in the political process. He stressed that while they do not engage in political activities, they collaborate with government officials to ensure active civic participation in line with existing laws and regulations.
He also acknowledged the efforts of the Independent Electoral Commission of Botswana in informing the public about the voter registration process and urged the chiefs to help communicate this important information to their communities.
