Renowned New York lawyer Alex Spiro has officially confirmed his involvement in investigating the potential connection between rapper Tupac Shakur’s 1996 murder and music mogul Sean “PDiddy” Combs.
Spiro has been hired by the Shakur family to explore whether PDiddy played any role in the orchestrated events leading to the death of Tupac, a case that has haunted the world for nearly three decades.
Tupac Shakur was gunned down on September 7, 1996, in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas while riding in a car with Marion “Suge” Knight, the co-founder of Death Row Records. The incident, which took place at a busy intersection, has been one of the most talked-about unsolved cases in hip-hop history, casting shadows over numerous individuals believed to be involved. For years, the murder remained unresolved, despite widespread speculation and various theories about who was behind the killing.
In a dramatic twist, Duane “Keffe D” Davis was arrested in 2023 and charged with Shakur’s murder. Davis has long been associated with the case due to his confession of being in the Cadillac from which the shots were fired. His arrest marked a significant breakthrough in a case that had largely gone cold, reigniting public interest in the unresolved questions about who else might have been involved.
While Davis has been the only person to face charges so far, his previous claims have pointed fingers toward Sean “PDiddy” Combs. Keffe D, who has offered various accounts of the events leading to Tupac’s murder, has repeatedly implicated Combs, alleging that the Bad Boy Records executive had some involvement in planning the hit. These claims, though widely reported over the years, have never led to charges against PDiddy.
The case took another turn when a detective, who testified before the grand jury that indicted Davis, made a stunning revelation. The detective claimed that Marion “Suge” Knight, who was also in the car with Tupac and survived the attack, had allegedly told others that Sean Combs was involved in the shooting. According to this testimony, Knight, who was a key figure in the East Coast-West Coast hip-hop rivalry that pitted Death Row Records against Bad Boy Records, pointed to Combs as being linked to the killing.
The rivalry between Tupac and Combs’ Bad Boy label, which was home to artists like The Notorious B.I.G., played a central role in the tensions that escalated into violence in the mid-1990s. At the time, Tupac and Biggie (The Notorious B.I.G.) were two of the biggest figures in hip-hop, and their conflict, amplified by media coverage, symbolized a larger feud between East Coast and West Coast rap factions.
For years, conspiracy theories have surrounded the circumstances of Tupac’s death, with some speculating that the shooting was a retaliatory act linked to the rivalry. Tupac himself had survived a previous shooting in 1994 in New York, which further intensified hostilities between the two camps. PDiddy, who was Biggie’s close friend and collaborator, has always denied any involvement in Tupac’s murder.

Alex Spiro’s involvement in the case is seen as a serious step forward by the Shakur family, who have been seeking justice for decades. Spiro is known for representing high-profile clients, including celebrities and public figures, and his legal acumen will likely bring renewed scrutiny to any evidence connecting PDiddy to the murder.
In a statement, Spiro acknowledged the sensitivity of the case, noting that Tupac’s murder is not just a cold case but a significant moment in American culture. He emphasized that the family seeks answers about whether others, beyond Davis, played a role in orchestrating the assassination of the iconic rapper.
