Songea Airport is on the brink of commencing 24-hour operations following the successful completion of a 40.87 billion Tanzanian Shillings rehabilitation and expansion project.
This significant development was highlighted by Abdul Mombokaleo, the director general of the Tanzania Airports Authority (TAA), during a briefing with President Samia Suluhu Hassan. The expansion project aims to unlock economic opportunities for local investors in the Ruvuma Region.
The ambitious project has transformed the airport’s runway, which has been extended from 1,625 meters to 1,860 meters, and its width has been broadened from 23 meters to 30 meters. These enhancements align with the specifications set forth by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), ensuring that the airport meets international standards for safety and operational efficiency.
Mohamed Besta, the chief executive officer of the Tanzania National Roads Agency (Tanroads), also noted that the apron has been enlarged to accommodate four Q400 aircraft and three light aircraft. This expansion is crucial for facilitating increased air traffic and improving the overall capacity of the airport. Furthermore, renovations to the passenger terminal are nearing completion, enhancing the travel experience for passengers.
The completion of this project is expected to have far-reaching implications for the local economy. By extending operational hours and accommodating more flights, Songea Airport aims to attract more investors and boost tourism in the Ruvuma Region. Local businesses are anticipated to benefit from increased passenger traffic and enhanced connectivity, which will stimulate economic growth.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan expressed her optimism regarding the project’s potential impact, emphasizing the government’s commitment to investing in infrastructure that supports economic development. She highlighted the importance of such initiatives in promoting regional development and improving the livelihoods of citizens.
With the expansion of Songea Airport, the region is poised to become a hub for transportation and commerce, fostering an environment conducive to business growth.
