Tanzania is expected to be among the five African countries benefiting from the construction of a major hospital project that will meet world-class standards for medical services (African Medical Center of Excellence – AMCE), through a project being implemented by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) in collaboration with King’s College Hospital, located in London, UK.
This was revealed by the Chief Executive Officer of the Medical Excellence Center, Abuja, Mr. Brian Deaver, when the Minister of Finance, Dr. Mwigulu Lameck Nchemba, led a Tanzanian delegation to visit the construction site of this project, just outside Abuja, Nigeria.
Mr. Deaver explained that the hospital, which will have the capacity to accommodate 500 patients at a time, will utilize modern technology that has never been used in Africa for treating blood cancers and sickle cell disease.
He further explained that the hospital, along with other hospitals to be built in Ghana, Kenya, and Tanzania, will provide comprehensive services including diagnostics, treatment, nuclear medicine, surgery, post-surgical care, and other specialized services known as oncology, hematology, and cardiology.
“As we implement this project, we aim to provide high-quality health services, train health professionals, conduct research, create jobs, control foreign currency needs, particularly dollars, and promote medical tourism in African countries,” Mr. Deaver added.
Speaking after visiting the project, which is expected to cost over 260 million USD, the Minister of Finance, Dr. Mwigulu Lameck Nchemba, and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Dr. Natu Elmaanry Mwamba, stated that this exemplary project will not only enhance medical services for the citizens but also become a part of medical tourism, attracting people from outside Tanzania to visit and receive these services.
