The Tanzanian government is taking significant steps to enhance healthcare accessibility across the country through the integration of a nationwide telemedicine network.
This initiative, aimed at providing quality healthcare services regardless of location, is currently under discussion between the Ministry of Health in Mainland Tanzania and the Ministry of Health in Zanzibar.
Deputy Minister of the Office of the President-TAMISEMI, Dr. Festo Dugange, representing the Deputy Minister of Health, Dr. Godwin Mollel, announced this development today in Dodoma during the 16th session of the 12th Parliament.
Dr. Dugange explained that the telemedicine service will include critical diagnostic procedures such as MRI, CT scans, and X-rays. Under this system, patients in remote areas without access to specialized doctors can have their diagnostic images transmitted online to hospitals with specialists, such as Muhimbili National Hospital. These specialists will then provide medical advice and recommendations in real-time, enabling timely and effective treatment for patients.

“This system will bridge the gap in specialized medical care and ensure that all Tanzanians, regardless of their location, can access high-quality healthcare services,” emphasized Dr. Dugange.
The integration of this telemedicine network represents a major advancement in Tanzania’s healthcare system, promising to enhance the quality and accessibility of medical services across both the mainland and the islands.
