Veronica Thomas, one of the food vendors striving to provide excellent service, explained her stance, saying, “As a food vendor, I understand the importance of prioritizing the health of my customers. I don’t have a habit of adding preservatives to food because I know its harmful effects. However, I have noticed that some of my colleagues prioritize quick profits and forget about their customers’ health.”
Mzee Ramadhan Karim, who has been a resident of Kariakoo for a long time, questioned the dirtiness in food preparation and its consequences for public health.
He said, “We are witnessing an increase in diseases directly related to the foods we eat. People are facing problems such as potbellies and obesity due to chemically-laden foods and poor nutrition. Food vendors contribute by adding preservatives and preparing food in dirty environments, and this is dangerous to our health.”
Stomach ailments, obesity, and other health issues have been significant challenges for residents of Kariakoo. This situation requires urgent steps to improve access to better food and enhance cleanliness standards in food vendor areas. Education on the importance of proper nutrition and hygiene should be disseminated to all traders and the community at large to safeguard the health and well-being of Kariakoo residents.
Meanwhile, government officials and relevant organizations are urged to take decisive actions to control misuse and dirtiness in food vendor services. Quality control of food and hygiene is crucial in ensuring public health and safety in the area.
