China has said it will not attend the Ukraine peace conference hosted by Switzerland in mid-June.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that it would be “difficult” for China to attend because some of the “important” conditions for its participation were not met, including the participation of both Russia and Ukraine.

China has insisted that peace talks should have “three important elements”: recognition by Russia and Ukraine, equal participation by all parties, and fair discussion of all peace plans. The spokesperson said these requirements were not met by the conference arrangements.
Moscow has not been invited to the conference, and has said it would not attend even if invited, arguing that the summit will revolve around Ukrainian President Zelensky’s “peace formula” which Russia has dismissed as “detached from reality.”
Watch:
The Kremlin has also stated that Switzerland is not fit to mediate in peace efforts, saying it switched “from neutral to openly hostile” after joining sanctions on Russia in 2022.
Among other states, the leaders of several BRICS nations including Brazil and South Africa are also reportedly skipping the event. US President Biden is not scheduled to attend.
Switzerland announced that it has invited over 160 delegations from around the globe to participate in a Ukraine peace conference on June 15 and 16 at the five-star Bürgenstock Hotel above Lake Lucerne in central Switzerland.
The delegates so far, include the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the president of the European Council, Charles Michel, Germany’s Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, the head of the Italian government, Giorgia Meloni, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and French President Emmanuel Macron.
The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, said in a statement that the invitees, except Russia, include members of the G7, G20, BRICS, EU, various international organizations, and two religious representatives.
While this could be the fifth public attempt to secure a peaceful deal between Russia and Ukraine, exempting Russia ,leaves room for critics to conclude
that the pending Swiss Peace Conference would yield no result .
