It promises to continue providing funds to help Tanzania solve the obstacles to economic growth
Millennium Challenge Corporation (Millennium Challenge Corporation-MCC) of the United States Government has expressed its satisfaction with the reform of operational systems, carried out by the Sixth Phase Government in various areas including the strengthening of democracy, good governance and human rights.
This was stated during the meeting held between the delegation of the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania and the delegation of the Millennium Challenge Organization held on October 17, 2024 in Dodoma.
Speaking at the meeting Mr. Dan Barnes, Director of Policy and Evaluation of the organization who also led the American delegation to the conference, has explained that during the three years of this Government, they have been satisfied with the various measures taken by Tanzania that have contributed to increasing the speed of economic development in the country.
Likewise, in the meeting, Mr. Barnes explained that the US Congress has also approved Tanzania to continue benefiting from the funding of the MCC Organization, after being satisfied with the performance of the Tanzanian Government. These decisions will enable Tanzania to continue to be given aid in development activities that will help raise the economy of individual citizens and the nation as a whole.
This step reached by MCC is based on the sincere commitment of the Government of the Sixth Phase to make reforms and improvements in its performance. Along with effective policy and stable leadership of the Government, the reform has been achieved through the 4Rs philosophy of the Hon. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania for reconciliation, resilience, reform and new construction that brought political, social and economic unity in Tanzania. This philosophy has helped to attract various development partners around the world including MCC for mutual benefit.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation Hon. Mahamoud Thabit Kombo participated in the meeting which included Ministers in charge of various sectors from Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar that are directly involved in the management and implementation of various projects sponsored by MCC.
Contributing to the meeting, Minister Kombo has explained that Tanzania will continue to respect and honor the good relationship that exists between it and the United States that has lasted for more than six decades, while cooperating in various sectors including education, health, business and investment, agriculture, energy, tourism, Technology, protection and minerals. Those sectors are funded through various programs including USAID, PEPFAR and Peace Corps.
In addition, Minister Kombo emphasized that the United Republic of Tanzania will continue to respect and implement the principles of democracy and good governance and human rights which are the values of Tanzania and the United States.
The good diplomatic relationship between Tanzania and the United States has continued to manifest itself through the visits of the country’s leaders, where in 2023 the Vice President of the United States and the Presidential Candidate of the country through the Democrat party Hon. Kamala Harris visited Tanzania.
Tanzania has been benefiting from the funding of development projects from MCC since 2005. The projects include: construction of Tunduma to Sumbawanga road, Pemba rural roads, Tanga to Horohoro road and Mtwara drainage roads.
Other projects include; Mafia airport, increasing the capacity of the Ruvu underground pumping station and the water supply project in Morogoro, improvements and expansion of energy supply lines, the solar energy project in Kigoma region and projects to build the capacity of the Electricity Corporation of Tanzania (TANESCO) and Zanzibar Electricity Company (ZECO).
