Lissu Takes Over Leadership at Tanzania Centre for Democracy

Tundu Lissu, the newly elected chairman of Chadema, has officially assumed his role as the Chairman of the Tanzania Centre for Democracy (TCD), a key platform that brings together political parties to promote dialogue and democratic governance.

In a symbolic handover ceremony held at TCD’s offices in Mikocheni, Dar es Salaam, on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, Lissu was presented with the organization’s constitution by Executive Director Bernadetha Kafuko. The event was attended by various political figures, including TCD Vice Chairperson and ACT-Wazalendo leader, Dorothy Semu.

Lissu steps into the role following his recent election as Chadema’s chairman, succeeding Freeman Mbowe. By tradition, the TCD chairmanship is held by the leader of the country’s largest opposition party, making his appointment a natural transition.

During his speech, Lissu reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening democracy in Tanzania. He emphasized the importance of open political dialogue, urging all parties to engage in meaningful discussions to ensure fair and inclusive governance.

“Tanzania’s democracy can only grow if we, as political leaders, put the country first and work together to build a system that serves all citizens,” he said.

His leadership comes at a critical time, as Tanzania continues to navigate key political and electoral reforms ahead of the next general elections. With opposition parties pushing for changes in the political landscape, Lissu’s tenure at TCD is expected to play a crucial role in advocating for democratic freedoms, fair elections, and better political cooperation.

The coming months will be a test of how effectively he can use this platform to unite political stakeholders and push for reforms that reflect the will of the people.
