Former Prime Minister Retired Judge Joseph Warioba has urged media practitioners to adhere to professional ethics, emphasizing the importance of fairness and objectivity in their reporting.

His remarks came during the launch of the report titled “State of the Media in Tanzania 2022-2023” held in Dar es Salaam.

In his address, Warioba expressed concern over the increasing trend of sensationalism, commonly referred to as ‘Uchawa,’ which he believes is compromising the quality and integrity of journalism in Tanzania. He highlighted that the current media landscape is often dominated by biased and sycophantic reporting, which undermines the media’s fundamental role in serving the public interest.

“Each media house has its editorial policies, but whatever the guidelines, the main objective should be to publish content that favors the public interest,” Warioba stated. He stressed that the primary responsibility of the media is to inform and educate the public truthfully and impartially, rather than sensationalizing news to attract readership or viewership.

Warioba’s call to action comes at a crucial time when the media industry in Tanzania faces numerous challenges. Political pressures and economic constraints are significantly impacting journalistic independence and the overall quality of news reporting. The report “State of the Media in Tanzania 2022-2023” highlights these challenges, noting that many journalists work under difficult conditions, which often leads to compromised standards and ethical lapses

The former Prime Minister also pointed out the importance of continuous professional development for journalists. He urged media organizations to invest in training and capacity-building initiatives to ensure that journalists are well-equipped to navigate the complexities of modern news reporting. “Journalism is a dynamic field that requires constant learning and adaptation. Media practitioners must stay updated with the latest developments and best practices to maintain high standards of reporting,” he added.

Moreover, Warioba called for stronger regulatory frameworks to support ethical journalism. He suggested that media regulatory bodies should be empowered to enforce standards and hold media houses accountable for unethical practices. “Regulation is not about censorship; it is about ensuring that the media operates within a framework that promotes integrity, fairness, and responsibility,” he clarified.

The event also saw discussions on the impact of digital media on journalism. Participants noted that the rise of social media and online platforms has transformed the media landscape, bringing both opportunities and challenges. While digital media has democratized information dissemination, it has also led to the proliferation of misinformation and fake news. Warioba emphasized the need for journalists to uphold their role as gatekeepers of information, ensuring that only verified and credible news reaches the public.

Warioba’s remarks serve as a timely reminder of the critical role that ethical journalism plays in a democratic society. By adhering to professional standards and prioritizing the public interest, media practitioners can contribute to a more informed, engaged, and empowered populace. The launch of the “State of the Media in Tanzania 2022-2023” report marks a significant step towards fostering a media environment that upholds the values of truth, fairness, and accountability
