Retired leader of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania (ELCT), Dr. Fredrick Shoo, has affirmed that the church will continue its cooperation with Tanzania’s sixth administration in combating those who trample on people’s rights and addressing the problem of superstitious beliefs, which have been linked to the perpetuation of poverty in the country.
Dr. Shoo made these remarks on Sunday, September 29, 2024, during a special service to honor the retirement of Central Northern Diocese Bishop Dr. Solomon Massangwa. He echoed the message delivered by Arusha Regional Commissioner Paul Makonda, who urged the public to abandon misguided beliefs and practices that hinder development.
“We are witnessing numerous problems and crises in this country, partly because even some top leaders are involved in such practices, driven by their personal beliefs as they seek positions of power. It is our duty as religious leaders to collaborate with government officials in condemning these harmful practices,” Dr. Shoo said.
