Jay-Z has filed a defamation lawsuit against attorney Tony Buzbee after a sexual assault case filed by Buzbee against the rapper was dismissed earlier this year.
The lawsuit originally claimed that Jay-Z had assaulted a 13-year-old girl at an MTV Video Music Awards afterparty back in 2000. However, the case was dropped with prejudice in February 2025, following concerns over the credibility of the allegations.
In response, Jay-Z is now accusing Buzbee of causing him significant harm by spreading false accusations. The rapper alleges that Buzbee’s actions have severely damaged both his reputation and his business. In his lawsuit, Jay-Z claims that the false claims have led to a loss of $20 million in business deals and caused considerable emotional strain for him and his family.
The original case had been filed by Buzbee on behalf of a woman who was identified only as Jane Doe. She accused Jay-Z and fellow rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs of sexually assaulting her at the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards afterparty. However, she later chose to drop the case, preventing it from being refiled in the future.
Jay-Z has strongly denied the allegations, calling them entirely false and damaging to his family. In his new legal filing, he argues that Buzbee’s claims were not only baseless but also intentional attempts to extort him and hurt his reputation.
