The Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) has announced that the exploration project for crude oil and gas in the Eyasi Wembere Basin, located in the regions of Simiyu, Singida, and Arusha, is currently 40% complete.
This project, which commenced in 2015 with government funding exceeding TZS 40 billion, focuses on gathering and processing seismic data to ascertain the presence of oil and gas reserves in the area.
During a visit to the project site by members of the TPDC Board, Acting Exploration Manager Simino Nyarusi highlighted the ongoing research activities within the basin. He noted that the exploration efforts are being conducted in two primary areas: onshore and in the waters of Lake Eyasi.

Nyarusi reported that the onshore research has reached 40% completion, revealing several indicators that significantly increase the optimism regarding the presence of oil and gas in the region.
“Since the research began in 2015, we have made considerable progress through various stages. At this phase, we have begun to see significant successes, with 40% of our exploration completed and notable indicators of oil presence emerging,” Nyarusi stated.
The TPDC’s commitment to the project aims to enhance the country’s energy resources, contributing to national development and economic growth.
As the exploration continues, stakeholders remain hopeful that the findings will lead to the discovery of commercially viable oil and gas deposits, which would further boost Tanzania’s energy sector and provide new opportunities for investment and job creation in the region.
The TPDC will continue to monitor and report on the progress of the project as it advances toward completion.
