The Tanzanian government has emphasized its commitment to upholding the integrity and accountability of the police force.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has reiterated that any citizen who experiences misconduct by police officers can lodge a complaint directly at various levels, including police stations, districts, regions, or even directly with the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
This announcement was made following questions raised in Parliament by MPs Ussi Salum Pondeza and Ester Matiko, who inquired about the procedures citizens should follow when falsely accused or subjected to other forms of police misconduct.
In response, the Ministry assured the public that there is a streamlined digital system in place, designed to handle and process complaints effectively. This system allows citizens to submit their grievances directly to the ministry, ensuring that any officer found guilty of unethical conduct faces severe consequences. These may include military prosecution, dismissal from service, and potential criminal charges.
The government’s emphasis on digital complaint handling is part of a broader effort to enhance transparency and ensure swift justice. By leveraging technology, the Ministry of Home Affairs aims to make it easier for citizens to hold the police accountable, thus fostering trust between the public and law enforcement agencies.

The Ministry’s stance comes at a time when police accountability is under increased scrutiny, and this initiative is seen as a crucial step in addressing public concerns about police misconduct. Citizens are encouraged to use these channels without fear, as the government is committed to protecting their rights and ensuring that any form of injustice is promptly addressed.
This move is in line with President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s broader reforms aimed at improving governance and strengthening institutions across the country. The focus on police accountability reflects the government’s dedication to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that all citizens, regardless of their status, are treated fairly and justly.
