A speedboat accident in Nigeria’s southern Delta State has resulted in the deaths of at least five people, while 20 others remain missing. The tragic incident occurred on Friday in the remote Gbaramatu Kingdom, within the Warri South-West district, after the vessel struck a submerged log and capsized.
According to a police spokesperson, the boat was traveling through the waterways commonly used by residents in the region when it hit the obstruction. The impact caused the vessel to overturn, throwing its passengers into the river. Emergency responders have since been conducting search and rescue operations to locate the missing individuals.
Authorities confirmed that six survivors were rescued from the wreckage and are currently receiving treatment at a local hospital. However, the fate of the 20 missing passengers remains uncertain as search efforts continue. The operation has been hampered by the challenging terrain and the remoteness of the accident site.
Local fishermen and community members have joined emergency teams in the rescue efforts, combing through the waterways for any signs of the missing. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with passengers thrown into the water in a matter of moments.

Accidents involving speedboats are not uncommon, often attributed to overcrowding, poorly maintained vessels, and a lack of safety equipment such as life jackets.
In response to the tragedy, local authorities have pledged to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident. Community leaders in the Gbaramatu Kingdom have also called for enhanced safety measures, including stricter enforcement of maritime regulations and improved navigation aids to prevent similar incidents.
The Gbaramatu Kingdom, home to several riverine communities, is in mourning as families await news of their missing loved ones. Many of the passengers on board the ill-fated boat were reportedly local residents traveling for routine activities.
The Nigerian government has expressed condolences to the affected families and assured them of continued efforts to recover those still missing.
