The District Commissioner (DC) of Kisarawe, Petro Magoti, has expressed frustration over the growing trend in the community where village leaders and parents resort to informal mediation to resolve cases involving students who become pregnant.
DC Magoti highlighted a troubling incident that occurred recently, which involved a student allegedly reporting an unplanned pregnancy to his office.
In an unexpected twist, the case took a dramatic turn when, after initial inquiries and intervention from law enforcement, it was discovered that the student was no longer pregnant. The mother of the student had originally reported the case, but it was later revealed, following a medical examination, that the pregnancy had been terminated.
In his remarks, DC Magoti shared how the case unfolded. He described how, after the student’s medical checkup, a doctor’s report confirmed that the pregnancy had been terminated, leading to the arrest and prosecution of both the student and her mother. They both denied any involvement in the abortion and refused to identify who was responsible for the pregnancy or the termination.

DC Magoti raised concerns about the growing number of similar cases where informal settlements were being sought instead of following proper legal procedures. He called on new leaders of the villages and wards to work closely with their communities to fight against student pregnancies and to avoid becoming involved in the informal resolution of such cases. Instead, he urged them to report such incidents to the relevant authorities for proper legal action.
The DC emphasized that handling such sensitive issues through informal means undermines the integrity of the justice system and could encourage further negligence regarding the welfare of students. He further urged parents and local leaders to focus on preventing these incidents by educating the youth about reproductive health and the consequences of teenage pregnancies.
