The Tanzanian government, in partnership with the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA), is putting together a proposal to seek approval for repairing the road infrastructure in the Serengeti National Park’s conservation area, which has been heavily damaged by recent heavy rains.
Government Spokesperson Mobhare Matinyi announced this initiative on Sunday, March 10, 2024, during a press briefing in Dodoma City focusing on the Serengeti National Park.
Matinyi explained that they are seeking permission from UNESCO due to the special status of national parks worldwide listed on the World Heritage List, which is managed by UNESCO. These parks are governed by a committee jointly overseen by UNESCO and the host country, with established conservation guidelines aimed at preserving their unique attributes. UNESCO also offers technical and, at times, financial assistance to ensure proper park upkeep.
Matinyi stressed the importance of conducting consultations when vital infrastructure projects, such as hotel or road construction, are required to maintain the integrity of the World Heritage Site in accordance with the World Heritage List’s stipulations.
