Over 1,500 inmates escaped from a prison in Mozambique, taking advantage of ongoing political unrest fueled by disputed election results, police reported.
Thirty-three people were killed, and 15 others injured in clashes with guards, said police chief Bernardino Rafael during a press conference. Around 150 escapees have since been recaptured, he added.

Protests erupted on Monday following Mozambique’s highest court’s confirmation that the ruling Frelimo party, in power since 1975, won the October presidential election.
Mr. Rafael stated that anti-government protest groups approached the prison in the capital, Maputo, on Wednesday. The prisoners exploited the chaos to break down a wall and escape, he said.
Mozambique has been gripped by turmoil since the disputed October election. Official results showed the ruling Frelimo party’s presidential candidate, Daniel Chapo, emerging victorious, but opposition parties have alleged electoral fraud
