The Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner, Albert Chalamila, has called for strict oversight of fertility clinics, particularly in the area of in-vitro fertilization (IVF), to prevent the rise of fraudulent operators.
Speaking at the inauguration of a new IVF clinic at Muhimbili National Hospital, Chalamila emphasized the need for the Ministry of Health to take firm control of services to ensure quality and safeguard patients from exploitation.
Chalamila highlighted recent actions taken against clinics like “Kiboko ya Wachawi,” citing their poor operational standards as an example of what the Ministry must avoid in health services. He urged health authorities to crack down on unauthorized practitioners who mislead vulnerable patients seeking fertility treatments.
This move is part of a broader push to ensure that healthcare services, particularly sensitive areas such as fertility treatments, are held to the highest standards of professionalism and transparency. According to Chalamila, regulatory bodies need to be proactive in identifying and addressing substandard practices to protect the public.
The fertility clinic sector in Tanzania has seen a steady rise in demand, with many couples seeking assistance with conception. However, with the growing popularity of such treatments, concerns about the proliferation of unlicensed and unqualified practitioners have also increased.
