The Tanzanian government, under the leadership of President Samia, continues to bridge the digital divide by providing ICT training to secondary school teachers from various parts of the country, particularly in rural schools, to improve education through technology.
The Minister of Information, Communication and Information Technology, Hon. Jerry William Silaa (MP), made these remarks on October 7, 2024, while opening an ICT training session for 300 secondary school teachers at the Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology (DIT) in Dar es Salaam.
The training is sponsored by the Universal Communication Services Access Fund (UCSAF) and is conducted by the Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology (DIT), Mbeya University of Science and Technology (MUST), and the University of Dodoma (UDOM), with each institution receiving 100 participants.
Minister Silaa emphasized that this training is a crucial step in ensuring that teachers are able to use ICT equipment more effectively and acquire skills to make minor repairs to equipment when they malfunction, as well as helping them use various digital applications that are essential in today’s technological world.
In another effort by the government to ensure that the entire country is connected to digital technology, Minister Silaa outlined the implementation steps of a major project to extend communication services to rural areas, where a total of 279 out of 758 towers being built through UCSAF grants have been switched on and are providing services, representing 36% of the total project implementation.
He added that these 758 towers are being built in 713 wards with 1,407 villages and that upon 100% completion, a total of 8.5 million people will benefit from this essential communication service.

Furthermore, Minister Silaa urged communication service providers who have entered into contracts for the construction of these towers to complete the implementation of this project because they do not intend to extend the construction period of the towers once the contract period expires on May 13, 2025.
