The sudden death of Dr. Faustine Ndugulile, the Regional Director-elect for WHO Africa and Member of Parliament for Kigamboni, has left the global and Tanzanian communities mourning.
Dr. Ndugulile, 54, passed away on November 27, 2024, in India, where he had been undergoing medical treatment.
The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, expressed profound sorrow over the loss. In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote: “Shocked and deeply saddened to learn about the sudden passing of Dr. Faustine Ndugulile, WHOAFRO Regional Director-elect. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends, and the parliament and people of Tanzania.”
Dr. Ndugulile was elected as WHO Regional Director for Africa in August 2024 after a rigorous selection process. He was set to succeed Dr. Matshidiso Moeti in 2025, with ambitions to revolutionize healthcare across the continent. During his campaign, he emphasized strengthening health systems and addressing critical challenges like infectious diseases and health inequities.

A distinguished medical doctor with expertise in Public Health and Medical Microbiology, Dr. Ndugulile’s contributions extended far beyond his international roles. In Tanzania, he was known for his work as the Deputy Minister of Health and as the first Minister of Communication and Information Technology. He also played a crucial role in health policy development, holding prominent positions in parliamentary committees.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan also mourned his loss, offering condolences to his family, constituents, and the global health community. She described Dr. Ndugulile as a visionary whose dedication to healthcare would continue to inspire.
