Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to the Kremlin for high-level discussions. Orban arrived in Russia on a working visit, and as the current President of the Council of the European Union, he is seeking to exchange views with Putin on the evolving situation in Ukraine.
In his opening remarks, Putin acknowledged Orban’s recent trip to Kyiv and expressed hope that they could jointly explore potential scenarios for resolving the major European crisis unfolding in Ukraine. Putin noted that he had recently addressed Russia’s foreign policy leadership on Moscow’s stance regarding a possible peace settlement, and he said he was ready to share details and explain the Russian position to Orban.
The two leaders are expected to have an in-depth dialogue about the status of the Ukraine conflict and coordinate their perspectives, given Hungary’s role in the EU leadership. As a long-standing partner of Russia, Orban’s visit is seen as an opportunity to facilitate dialogue and explore diplomatic solutions to the protracted Ukrainian crisis.
