The construction of the new compressed natural gas (CNG) mother station along Sam Nujoma Road in Dar es Salaam is making steady progress, with 67 percent of the work now complete.
Originally scheduled for completion in December 2024, the project has faced some delays due to a hold-up in the shipment of essential equipment from a Chinese port. However, with the equipment now finally arriving at the Dar es Salaam port, the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) is confident the station will be fully operational by January 2025.
Emmanuel Gilbert, TPDC’s Director of Downstream Operations, assured the public that the team is working tirelessly to ensure the station is ready by the new deadline. “We’re doing everything possible to meet the January target,” he said. The station is an important part of Tanzania’s efforts to expand its natural gas network and provide cleaner, more affordable energy options for the country’s growing transportation sector.
The Sam Nujoma station will be capable of serving between 1,000 and 1,500 vehicles daily. In addition to this mother station, smaller satellite stations will be constructed at Muhimbili National Hospital and Kairuki Pharmaceuticals in Kibaha, Coast Region.

These stations are expected to provide more accessible refueling options, encouraging the use of compressed natural gas and reducing the reliance on traditional fuels.
At present, Tanzania operates just four CNG stations—located in Tazara, Airport, Ubungo, and Mandela Road. The opening of the Sam Nujoma station will significantly expand the country’s CNG infrastructure, making it easier for drivers to switch to cleaner energy sources. This move aligns with the nation’s broader goals of reducing its dependence on imported fuels and advancing sustainability in the transportation sector.
With the project near completion, the hope is that this new station will not only enhance access to cleaner energy but also support Tanzania’s long-term environmental goals.
