A man was shot by U.S. Secret Service agents near the White House early Sunday after allegedly displaying a firearm when approached by officers.
Authorities say the individual, identified as Andrew Dawson, had been under watch following reports that he was traveling to Washington, D.C., from Indiana with intentions of harming himself.
The incident happened around midnight near the intersection of 17th Street NW and F Street NW, an area close to the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, which is part of the White House complex. Law enforcement had earlier received intelligence suggesting Dawson, a 27-year-old from North Manchester, Indiana, might pose a threat to himself or others.
Secret Service officials confirmed that agents spotted a vehicle matching the description provided by police and later found Dawson nearby. When they attempted to engage him, he reportedly pulled out a firearm, prompting officers to open fire. Emergency responders quickly transported him to a hospital, where his condition remains undisclosed.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the shooting, following standard protocol for such incidents in the District of Columbia. The Metropolitan Police Department’s Internal Affairs Division is leading the probe alongside federal agencies.

At the time of the incident, President Donald Trump was not at the White House. He was spending the weekend at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
This is not the first security-related event linked to Trump in recent months. In late 2024, authorities thwarted an armed individual’s attempt to enter Trump’s private golf club in Florida, and a separate case involved a man carrying weapons near a campaign rally checkpoint in California.
The Secret Service has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of the White House and those under its protection. Officials say all security incidents undergo thorough investigation to uphold public safety and national security.
