Chad has strongly criticized French President Emmanuel Macron, accusing him of showing disrespect toward African nations, despite France’s involvement in tackling insurgencies in the Sahel region.
In a statement aired on Chad’s national television on January 6, 2025, Abderamane Koulamallah, Chad’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, expressed frustration over what he sees as Macron’s arrogance and lack of gratitude towards African countries. Koulamallah suggested that Macron’s actions reflect an ongoing pattern of condescension, especially given the help African nations, including Chad, have provided to France in times of crisis.
“The behavior of President Macron is one of arrogance and disregard for African countries,” said Koulamallah. “We expect French leaders to treat African nations with the respect they deserve.”
Koulamallah also took the opportunity to remind France of Africa’s crucial role in supporting France historically, particularly during the World Wars. He stressed Chad’s significant contribution and the sacrifices made to assist France in those difficult times.
He pointed out that while France has provided support to Chad, it has largely been driven by its own strategic interests rather than a genuine focus on helping the long-term development of the Chadian people. “The contributions of France to Chad have been largely about their own interests, not about the sustainable development of our people,” he added.

This criticism comes amid rising tensions between France and several African countries, especially in the Sahel region, where security concerns have worsened due to armed groups. Over the years, many African nations have become more vocal about their frustration with France’s paternalistic approach.
The statement from Chad signals a broader shift in African diplomacy. Many African nations are now pushing to redefine their relationships with former colonial powers, aiming for equal partnerships based on mutual respect. “African countries are starting to stand up for themselves and demand that France and other former colonial powers respect their sovereignty,” said Dr. Abdoulaye Touré, a political analyst based in Senegal.
France’s role in Africa, particularly in its military presence, has been increasingly scrutinized. Macron has faced criticism for not adjusting his policies to meet the changing expectations of African countries.
