An internal leadership dispute has emerged within CHADEMA after the party’s Mwanga District Chairman, Lembrus Mchome, raised concerns over the recent appointment of eight leaders.
He has written to Secretary General John Mnyika, urging him to respond to his formal complaint about the selection process carried out by Chairman Tundu Lissu on January 22, 2025.
Mchome argues that the appointments which include key figures such as Secretary General Mnyika, the Deputy Secretary Generals for Mainland and Zanzibar, and five members of the Central Committee, among them Godbless Lema—were made without adhering to the party’s constitutional requirements.
In his letter, registered under reference number KM/CDM/AD/2025, Mchome questions the validity of the decision-making process, citing that the party’s National Council consists of 412 members, and any major resolutions should have at least 309 members present—equivalent to 75% of the quorum. However, according to him, only 85 members (about 20.6%) participated in approving the appointments, which he believes undermines the legitimacy of the process.

“I am seeking clarification on how these appointments were approved without the required quorum. It is important to uphold transparency and respect the party’s constitution,” Mchome stated.
As of now, Secretary General Mnyika has not officially responded to Mchome’s claims, and the issue continues to generate discussions within the party. Some members are calling for a clear response to address concerns and avoid potential divisions within CHADEMA.
The development comes at a critical time for the party as it prepares for upcoming political activities. Analysts suggest that how the leadership handles this internal disagreement could impact party unity and public trust.
