In a recent address to local council members, Selestin Luhende, the District Police Chief of Ludewa in Njombe Region, has called on couples to refrain from invading each other’s privacy by checking their partner’s mobile phones.
He emphasized that such actions can lead to serious consequences, including marital strife and potential legal repercussions.
Luhende highlighted the importance of trust in relationships and the negative impact that snooping can have on marital harmony.

“Invasion of privacy not only breeds suspicion and conflict but can also lead to the breakdown of relationships,” he stated.
He urged couples to communicate openly and to cultivate trust rather than resorting to clandestine measures that can damage their bonds.
During the meeting, he elaborated on the legal ramifications of checking a partner’s phone without their consent, stating that individuals found guilty of this act could face fines ranging from five million to twenty million Tanzanian Shillings or imprisonment for up to five years, or both penalties combined.
“If you are found guilty of snooping through your partner’s phone or reading their messages, you are already violating the law. The consequences are severe and should not be taken lightly,” Luhende warned.
The police chief’s remarks come amid rising concerns about domestic disputes in the region, which often stem from misunderstandings and breaches of trust.
He urged couples to seek constructive ways to resolve conflicts rather than resorting to physical confrontations, which can escalate quickly and result in legal actions against the aggressor.
Luhende further advised that if a partner feels compelled to check their spouse’s phone out of suspicion, it might be a sign of deeper issues within the relationship that require addressing.
“The first step should always be to engage in a dialogue with your partner rather than taking matters into your own hands,” he advised.
The session was aimed at raising awareness about various security issues within the community, with an emphasis on fostering respectful relationships.
