Many programs of the East African Community (EAC) have stalled in recent months due to a cash crunch caused by partner states failing to remit approximately $40 million in dues.
By press time, some of the regional body’s workers were yet to be paid their May 2024 salaries, and a number of organs and institutions had suspended their activities due to lack of budget.
The East African Court of Justice (EACJ), the region’s legal watchdog, announced that it was suspending sessions due to financial constraints.

The East African Community (EAC) is facing a funding crisis as partner states have not remitted their dues, resulting in stalled programs and activities. The East African Court of Justice has suspended sessions, and the regional parliament has also indicated a lack of funding. The EAC Secretariat submitted a budget estimate of $103,842,880, with 40% yet to be funded.
The failure to remit contributions has affected key priorities, including regional governance processes and trade-related policies. Only Kenya has fully remitted its contributions, while Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, and South Sudan have outstanding bills.
