Tanzania’s second president, Ali Hassan Mwinyi, has passed away at the age of 98.
The death of Tanzania’s former Head of State was announced today, February 29, by President Samia Suluhu Hassan in a Live telecast.
President Samia , who officially made the announcement, has declared seven days of national mourning in honour of former President Ali Hassan Mwinyi . National flags will fly at half-mast throughout Tanzania for the duration of the seven-day mourning period.
Mwinyi passed away on Thursday, February 29, at Mzena Hospital in Dar es Salaam, where he was receiving treatment for lung cancer.The Former President served as the second president of the United Republic of Tanzania from 1985 to 1995, succeeding Julius Nyerere. His previous posts include Interior Minister and Vice President.
Mwinyi will be laid to rest on March 2; his final resting place is yet to be confirmed.
During his presidency, Mwinyi implemented various economic reforms and policies aimed at fostering development and stability in Tanzania. He was known for his commitment to promoting peace and unity within the nation.
