In the recently concluded CHADEMA party elections, Odero Charles Odero secured a single vote, amounting to just 0.1% of the total votes cast.
Professor Raymond Mosha, the party’s Electoral Commission Chairperson, officially announced the results, marking a decisive moment for the opposition party.
Though Odero’s performance was modest, the race for the party’s national chairmanship was far from one-sided. Tundu Lissu emerged victorious, receiving 513 votes, or 51.5% of the ballots. The outcome was a close contest, with Freeman Mbowe following closely behind, securing 482 votes.
The results were revealed in Dar es Salaam, where members of the party eagerly awaited the outcome of what had become a highly anticipated election. Despite receiving minimal support, Odero’s participation in the election highlighted CHADEMA’s commitment to democracy and inclusion, ensuring that every voice had a place in the process.
For Tundu Lissu, his victory marks a fresh start for the party. In his acceptance speech, Lissu expressed deep gratitude for the support he received, promising to continue his efforts toward a more democratic and just Tanzania. “This victory is not just mine, but a victory for everyone committed to shaping a brighter future,” Lissu declared.
Although Freeman Mbowe fell short of securing the chairmanship, he displayed a spirit of unity and sportsmanship, congratulating Lissu and urging all party members to unite behind the new leader. “This has been a fair competition, and now is the time to work together for the success of CHADEMA,” Mbowe stated.

Political analysts have emphasized the significance of this election for CHADEMA, noting the strong engagement from party members and the narrow margin between Lissu and Mbowe. The election results reflect a party poised to face the challenges ahead and play a key role in Tanzania’s evolving political landscape.
As for Odero, despite the limited backing, his candidacy speaks to the inclusivity of the democratic process within CHADEMA. His single vote may seem small, but it underscores his belief in the importance of participation and change. “Even with one vote, it’s a vote for progress,” Odero remarked after the results were announced.
Looking ahead, the party will now turn its focus to uniting its members under Lissu’s leadership and preparing for the upcoming general elections. With new leadership at the helm, many hope CHADEMA will bring renewed purpose and direction to Tanzania’s political scene.
