The Minister of Home Affairs, Innocent Bashungwa, has directed the National Identification Authority (NIDA) to distribute 1.2 million completed national IDs within two months.
The minister emphasized the urgency during his official visit to the authority’s headquarters in Dar es Salaam on December 17, 2024.
Speaking to NIDA officials, Bashungwa underscored the importance of ensuring citizens receive their IDs promptly. He issued a firm ultimatum, stating, “It is your duty to ensure these cards are delivered to the intended recipients within two months. When I return for an update, I expect a report confirming that this task has been accomplished.”
Free Replacement of Faulty IDs
In addition to the distribution directive, Bashungwa addressed complaints from citizens about ID cards with illegible text caused by production errors. He instructed NIDA to provide free replacements to affected individuals, stressing that no one should encounter financial or procedural hurdles when obtaining a corrected ID.
“This is a matter of integrity and service to our citizens,” Bashungwa remarked. “Errors in production should not translate to inconvenience for those relying on these crucial documents.”

Enhancing Public Service Delivery
The minister took the opportunity to critique inefficiencies within NIDA and called for a significant overhaul in service delivery. He urged the management to adopt a more citizen-focused approach and eliminate bureaucratic delays.
“NIDA must transform how it interacts with the public,” Bashungwa stated. “I expect immediate action against staff members who are negligent or provide subpar services. Accountability is non-negotiable.”
Modernization and Accountability
Bashungwa stressed the need for modernization within NIDA to enhance efficiency and rebuild public trust. He emphasized the importance of treating citizens with respect and prioritizing seamless service delivery.
The directive reflects the government’s broader commitment to improving access to essential services and addressing systemic challenges. As NIDA moves to implement the minister’s orders, citizens are hopeful that these efforts will result in timely delivery of IDs and a smoother experience when engaging with the authority.
This proactive approach aims to strengthen the link between effective governance and the public’s ability to access opportunities facilitated by proper identification documentation.
