Tanzania is making waves in East Africa’s electric vehicle (EV) sector, becoming a key player in the region’s shift toward greener transportation.

According to the 2023 Africa E-Mobility Alliance report, Tanzania is emerging as a leader in embracing EVs, showing great promise in adopting this sustainable mobility option.

However, as interest in EVs grows, some significant challenges remain. Chief among them are the limited public awareness about electric vehicles and a lack of adequate charging stations. For many potential EV owners, these obstacles are preventing them from making the switch to cleaner, more sustainable vehicles.

To address these issues head-on, Tanzanian entrepreneur Gibson Kawago is taking action. His company, WAGA Motion, has launched a pilot program to install EV charging stations, focusing on select locations for early adopters. The aim of this initiative is to lay the groundwork for a more extensive charging network that will eventually be available to all Tanzanians, making it easier for them to transition to electric vehicles.

In a recent interview, Kawago shared his vision for the future of EVs in Tanzania. “A lot of people want to bring electric vehicles to Tanzania, but their biggest question is, ‘Where can I charge my car?’ This is exactly why we’re working on building a reliable and accessible charging infrastructure. Our goal is to make it as easy as possible for people to make the switch to electric mobility,” he explained.

The importance of this project goes beyond just convenience for individual car owners. The move to a robust charging network will help accelerate the broader adoption of electric vehicles, supporting Tanzania’s efforts to become a more environmentally conscious nation.

This initiative is part of a larger movement in Tanzania that involves both private and public sectors working together to create the infrastructure necessary for EV adoption. With the support of stakeholders, the country is steadily moving toward making electric vehicles a practical and popular choice for Tanzanians.

Kawago’s vision not only addresses the practical needs of potential EV owners but also plays a crucial role in shaping a more sustainable future for transportation in Tanzania and beyond.
