The Foundation for Disability Hope (FDH) has commended President Samia Suluhu Hassan for her commitment to improving the living standards of people with albinism (PWA) in Tanzania through targeted economic empowerment initiatives.
Maiko Salali, the director and founder of the Foundation, made these remarks yesterday during the Geita International Mining Technology Expo. He highlighted that President Samia has planted a humanitarian seed that will resonate in the hearts of many Tanzanians with disabilities for years to come. Salali praised her dedication to creating a more inclusive society where individuals with albinism can thrive.
One of the notable achievements mentioned by Salali is the increased accessibility of healthcare services for people with albinism. Under President Samia’s leadership, efforts have been made to ensure that essential items, such as sunscreen lotion, are readily available to protect them from harmful UV rays. This initiative is particularly important as individuals with albinism are at a higher risk of skin-related health issues due to their condition.
In addition to healthcare improvements, Salali noted the expansion of economic opportunities for people with albinism. He specifically mentioned the Rafiki Briquettes project, which has successfully enabled many individuals with albinism to become self-employed. This initiative not only fosters independence but also encourages entrepreneurship among PWA, allowing them to contribute meaningfully to their communities.

The Foundation for Disability Hope remains dedicated to advocating for the rights and welfare of people with albinism. Salali called for increased awareness and understanding of the challenges faced by this community, urging the government and society at large to implement more inclusive policies and programs that promote their integration and support. By continuing to empower people with albinism, the Foundation aims to create a more equitable society where everyone, regardless of their circumstances, can lead fulfilling lives.
