Tanzania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Hon. Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, has arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he will lead Tanzania’s delegation at the 46th Session of the African Union (AU) Council of Ministers.
This important meeting will take place on February 12 and 13, 2025.
The session is part of a series of discussions leading up to the 38th African Union Summit, which will gather heads of state and government on February 15 and 16, 2025. Ahead of this major summit, the 49th Session of the Committee of Ambassadors, or Permanent Representatives to the African Union, took place from January 14 to February 10, 2025. These discussions have been critical in shaping the agenda for the upcoming summit.
Tanzania’s President, Hon. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, will represent the country at the summit, accompanied by a delegation of ministers and senior officials from both the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania and the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar. The discussions at the summit are expected to cover a wide range of important topics, including critical elections within the African Union Commission.
The assembly will elect a new Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, and six new commissioners, who will replace the current leadership at the conclusion of their four-year term. Elections will also be held for positions within other AU bodies, such as the Peace and Security Council, the African Space Agency, and the African Union Anti-Corruption Advisory Board. Additionally, the role of Vice-President of the Pan-African University Council will be up for election.

In addition to these elections, the summit will focus on significant reports and discussions, such as the African Union’s involvement in the G20 Summit, its institutional reform process, and the progress made in implementing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Leaders will also consider resolutions from the Sixth Mid-Year Coordinating Committee Meeting held in Accra, Ghana, in July 2024.
As Ambassador Kombo and his team prepare for their participation in these key deliberations, Tanzania continues to show its commitment to advancing the collective goals of Africa. The Tanzanian delegation’s involvement in these important conversations highlights the nation’s dedication to regional collaboration and a more prosperous future for the continent.
Upon his arrival in Addis Ababa, Ambassador Kombo was warmly welcomed by the Tanzanian Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Hon. Innocent Shio, marking the start of Tanzania’s active participation in the critical discussions ahead.
