President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration will be held inside the U.S. Capitol, instead of the usual outdoor ceremony, due to a severe cold front sweeping across the country.
This marks the first time in 40 years that a presidential swearing-in has been moved indoors.
On Friday, Trump took to his Truth Social platform to explain the change. With an Arctic blast affecting much of the nation, he said, “I don’t want to see people hurt, or injured, in any way.” The cold temperatures in Washington, D.C. are expected to be around 19°F (-7°C) at the time of the ceremony, but with the wind chill, it will feel even colder. In light of the safety concerns, the ceremony will now take place in the Capitol Rotunda, where Trump will deliver his inaugural address, alongside prayers and other speeches.
This is the first time since 1985 that an inauguration has been moved indoors. That year, former President Ronald Reagan’s second swearing-in was also held inside due to freezing temperatures and wind chills that reached as low as -20°F (-29°C).

The decision to move the event indoors reflects the importance of ensuring the safety of both the public and participants in such extreme weather conditions.
