Nine members of a family have tragically lost their lives after their home was swept away by floodwaters in Tarime District, Mara Region, following continuous heavy rains.
The incident occurred in the early hours of November 25, 2024, in Bugosi Ward, within the Tarime Municipal Council. The victims’ bodies were carried by the raging waters of the nearby Mori River, which had burst its banks due to the persistent rainfall.
Edward Gowele, the District Commissioner of Tarime, confirmed the tragic event, stating that seven bodies had been recovered so far, and efforts were underway to locate the remaining victims. He mentioned that local residents and rescue teams had joined forces in the search for the missing individuals.
In addition to the loss of life, the floods have caused significant damage to property and crops in the area. Many homes were destroyed, and agricultural fields were submerged, further compounding the hardship faced by the local population. Despite the tragic events, two individuals managed to survive, although their condition has not yet been disclosed.
