The National Examinations Council of Tanzania (Necta) on Sunday announced the cancellation of results for 223 candidates engaged in cheating and writing insults in their Standard Four and Form Two 2023 National Assessments.
While the overall performance displayed a slight improvement, Necta unveiled in a press conference that 178 pupils who resorted to cheating and three who wrote insults into their Standard Four assessment scripts faced result annulment.
Additionally, 28 students who were caught cheating and 14 who resorted to abusive language in their Form Two assessment scripts saw their outcomes wiped off the records.
This revelation comes on the heels of The Citizen’s exposé, which brought to light a secret network coordinating examination malpractice, compromising the very basis of academic integrity in the country.
The persistent nature of this practice involves teachers, examination officials, middlemen, and even parents.
The executive secretary of Necta, Dr Said Mohamed, acknowledged the persistent challenge but highlighted a decreasing trend. “If you look at the trend, this situation is decreasing… The issue of writing insults in the script is a moral issue, but we will continue to address it as much as we can.”
Despite no school closures due to involvement in malpractice announced this time, Necta said it remained vigilant in its crackdown on all facets of examination cheating.
