Vice President Dr. Philip Mpango has strongly urged motorcycle riders, popularly known as ‘Boda boda,’ to consistently wear helmets as a crucial measure to prevent serious injuries during accidents.
His remarks were made during his visit to the Road Safety Week celebrations at the Jamhuri Grounds in Dodoma.
During the event, Dr. Mpango expressed concern over the increasing number of young people sustaining severe injuries in road accidents. He pointed out that the Muhimbili National Hospital has dedicated an entire ward to accident victims, many of whom are young ‘Boda boda’ riders suffering from head and limb injuries.
“As a nation, we are losing significant manpower due to these accidents. An entire ward at Muhimbili is now filled with young people who have broken legs and head injuries. We cannot continue like this,” Dr. Mpango emphasized.

He called on the media, particularly the Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC), to actively participate in educating young riders on the importance of road safety measures, including wearing helmets.
Dr. Mpango further highlighted the need for discipline among ‘Boda boda’ riders, urging them to be exemplary by consistently wearing helmets and adhering to traffic laws. This, he noted, is essential to reducing the high rate of road accidents that claim lives and inflict long-term disabilities on many young Tanzanians.
