A small Montenegrin community is reeling from shock after a tragic mass shooting in the southern city of Cetinje claimed 10 lives, including two children.
Four others sustained severe injuries and are receiving medical care in the capital, Podgorica, according to Prime Minister Danilo Saranovic.
The attacker, identified by police as Aleksandar Martinovic, carried out the shooting in a residential area before turning the weapon on himself. Authorities confirmed he succumbed to his injuries en route to the hospital.
“This is a dark day for our nation,” said Prime Minister Saranovic, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of life. “Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and those recovering from this senseless act of violence.”
Interior Minister Danilo Saranovic echoed the sentiment, calling the incident a devastating tragedy for Montenegro. He confirmed that the shooter acted alone but added that investigations are ongoing to determine the motive behind the attack.
Witnesses described the horrifying scene as the gunman indiscriminately opened fire on residents. Emergency responders rushed to the area, transporting the injured to nearby hospitals and securing the scene. The residential neighborhood where the incident occurred remains cordoned off as law enforcement continues its investigation.

The tragedy has left the peaceful Balkan nation in shock, as mass shootings are rare in Montenegro. The government has declared a period of national mourning to honor the victims. Flags will be flown at half-mast, and citizens have been urged to come together in solidarity during this time of grief.
“This is a moment for unity and compassion,” said the Prime Minister. “We will support the affected families and ensure such a tragedy does not happen again.”
As investigations unfold, authorities are expected to release additional information about the events leading up to the shooting and any underlying factors that may have played a role. For now, the country grieves the loss of innocent lives and prays for the recovery of those injured.
The incident has raised questions about gun control and public safety, prompting calls for stronger measures to prevent such violence. Meanwhile, the community of Cetinje mourns, remembering the victims and holding vigils to honor their lives.
