The Huawei ICT Competition 2023–2024 Global Final’s closing and awards ceremony took place in Shenzhen.Students from Tanzania’s University of Dar es Salaam were among the grand prize winners .
The University of Dar es Salaam students are:
Matimu Mahimbo – Computer Engineering and IT
Dickson Mram – Computer Engineering and IT
James Magesa – Telecommunications Engineering
This year’s event drew over 170,000 students from more than 2,000 universities and colleges spanning 80 countries and regions, marking it as the largest offline competition since its inception. A total of 160 teams, comprising 470 contestants from 49 different countries and regions, progressed through national and regional competitions to reach the global final held in Shenzhen from May 23 to May 26.

After fierce competition, 19 teams from nine countries (Algeria, China, Nigeria, Pakistan, Poland, the Philippines, Tanzania, Türkiye, and Uganda) won the Grand Prizes of the Practice and Innovation Competitions.
The Best Social Media Popularity Award was claimed by a team from Pakistan, while the Green Development Award was earned by two teams from China and Morocco. The Women in Tech Award recognized the achievements of four teams from Kenya, Malaysia, Morocco, and Uganda.
Additionally, the TECH4ALL Digital Inclusion Award was bestowed upon two teams from China and the Philippines.
Zhou Hong, President of Huawei’s Institute of Strategic Research, said: “To make sure everyone can truly enjoy the benefits of digitalization while such technologies are making radical progress, Huawei believes it is crucial to guarantee that digital technologies are accessible to all.”
Stefania Giannini, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Education, conveyed UNESCO’s commitment to safeguarding the rights of every learner and teacher in the digital realm, expressing gratitude to partners like Huawei for their enduring support in promoting an inclusive, equitable, open, and secure digital future.
Ritchie Peng, President of Huawei’s ICT Strategy and Business Development Department, highlighted ICT as the foundation of the intelligent world and the Huawei ICT Competition’s role in providing a global platform for students to compete and exchange ideas.
On the same day, Huawei also organized the ICT Accelerating Education Transformation Summit, during which 24 instructors were honored with the title “Huawei ICT Academy Global Most Valuable Instructor.” These awards, introduced for the first time this year, recognize the instructors’ significant contributions to talent development and position them as role models inspiring further growth among the brightest minds, thus fostering sustainable development of the ICT talent ecosystem.
The Huawei ICT Competition, an annual contest for global university and college students, aims to offer an international platform for healthy competition and idea exchange. Since its inception in 2015, the competition has been instrumental in enhancing students’ ICT knowledge and practical skills, fostering innovation with new technologies and platforms, ultimately advancing technological development and promoting digital inclusion worldwide.
