President Donld Trump spent the day criticizing Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, labeling him a “dictator” who has done a terrible job serving as Ukrainian President.
Trump’s remarks followed Zelensky’s response to US-Russia discussions in Saudi Arabia, from which Ukraine was excluded. Zelensky had accused the US president of “living in a disinformation space” controlled by Moscow.
At a Saudi-backed investment event in Florida, Trump claimed that Zelensky’s only talent was manipulating Joe Biden.

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer expressed his support for Zelensky during a phone call, with a Downing Street spokesperson affirming that Starmer backed the Ukrainian president as the country’s democratically elected leader. The spokesperson noted that suspending elections during wartime, as the UK did in World War Two, is “perfectly reasonable.”
Zelensky is scheduled to meet with American envoy for Russia and Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, on Thursday, emphasizing the importance of constructive dialogue and cooperation with the US. In a social media post, he mentioned that peace could be more secure with support from the US and Europe.
Zelensky’s five-year term is set to end in May 2024, but elections are currently suspended due to martial law following Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.

In Florida, Trump reiterated his “dictator” claim, questioning how Zelensky could be popular when cities are being devastated. He also accused Zelensky’s government of failing to fulfill a deal regarding rare-earth minerals.
Trump’s statements mirrored those in his Truth Social post, where he criticized Zelensky’s leadership and suggested that millions had died unnecessarily. He asserted that the US was “successfully negotiating an end to the war with Russia.”
A White House official indicated that Trump’s comments were a direct reaction to Zelensky’s remarks about “disinformation.”
On Tuesday, US and Russian officials held their first high-level face-to-face talks since the invasion began. A meeting both Russian Foreign Minister Sergay Lavron and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described as very successful.
