US President Donald Trump on Tuesday criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy after Zelenskyy expressed frustration over Ukraine’s exclusion from the US-Russia talks in Riyadh aimed at resolving the ongoing war.
Trump accused Zelenskyy of “starting” the conflict and labeled him a “grossly incompetent” leader and a poor negotiator.
Trump further asserted that Zelenskyy should have reached a deal to end the fighting with Russia nearly three years ago.
These comments followed the US and Russia’s discussions in Riyadh regarding the Ukraine war, which is now entering its third year since Russia’s invasion of the neighboring country in 2022. Ukraine was not part of the talks held on Tuesday.

Zelenskyy responded to Ukraine’s exclusion from the talks by stating that his country would not accept any outcomes related to the Ukraine war.
In reaction, Trump remarked, “Today I heard, ‘oh, we weren’t invited.’ Well, you’ve been there for three years. You should have ended it. You should have never started it. You could have made a deal.”
The US President also indicated that he would “probably” meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin this month. Earlier, Trump mentioned that he had been in contact with both Putin and Zelenskyy regarding efforts to end the Ukraine war.
During a briefing for reporters on the US-Russian talks in Riyadh, Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that no date had been set for a Trump-Putin summit to discuss Ukraine.
Rubio further stated there would be “engagement and consultation with Ukraine, with our partners in Europe and others. But ultimately, the Russian side will be indispensable to this effort.”
US State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce explained that the talks aimed to assess how serious the Russians are about pursuing peace and whether detailed negotiations could begin.
Trump criticized former President Joe Biden for his approach to the Ukraine situation, asserting, “I think I have the power to end this war.”

Trump suggested that Ukraine should hold elections, adding, “That’s not a Russia thing. That’s something coming from me and from many other countries as well.”
