A resident of Mbeya Region, Shadrack Chaula, has reportedly disappeared under mysterious circumstances, causing widespread concern.
The 24-year-old artist, who gained notoriety earlier this year, was arrested and charged with burning a picture of President Samia Suluhu Hassan and spreading false information.
On July 4, 2024, Chaula was sentenced to two years in prison or a fine of Sh5 million after being found guilty of cybercrimes. He had recorded a viral video that showed him burning the president’s picture while verbally insulting her, which led to charges of distributing false information and inciting public unrest. Magistrate Shamla Shehagilo found Chaula guilty of these offenses, and the court emphasized the need for a harsh penalty to serve as a deterrent against disrespecting the presidency.
Due to his inability to pay the hefty fine, Chaula was initially incarcerated. However, on July 8, 2024, he was released from Ruanda Prison after a swift and successful online fundraising campaign raised the Sh5 million necessary to pay his fine. This campaign highlighted the public’s support for Chaula, with donations pouring in within just a few hours.

Tragically, approximately 20 days after his release, on August 2, 2024, Chaula was reportedly abducted by unknown individuals. His father, Yusuph Chaula, has made a heartfelt appeal to President Samia Suluhu Hassan, urging her to intervene in the search for his son. “I am asking the government to intervene so that my son is found, whether alive or dead,” Yusuph pleaded.
Mbeya Region Police Commander, Benjamin Kuzaga, confirmed that an investigation is underway to uncover the truth behind Chaula’s disappearance. “We are continuing with the investigation to determine the truth of the incident,” Kuzaga stated.
The incident has drawn significant public attention and sympathy, particularly due to the swift and generous response to the fundraising campaign that facilitated Chaula’s release from prison. The community remains hopeful for a positive outcome as the investigation progresses.
The circumstances of his disappearance have only heightened these concerns, prompting calls for greater protection of individual rights and a more transparent investigation process.
