A Zambian police officer has been arrested for allegedly releasing 15 prisoners on New Year’s Eve in a bizarre incident that has shocked the nation.
Detective Inspector Titus Phiri, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, is accused of taking the keys to the cells and freeing the detainees at Leonard Cheelo Police Station in Lusaka.
According to a statement from the Zambia Police Service, the incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday. Inspector Phiri allegedly seized the keys from a junior officer, Constable Serah Banda, and opened the cells holding both male and female detainees. Witnesses claim he told the prisoners they were free to “cross over into the New Year.”
Out of the 15 detainees, 13 escaped into the night, including individuals facing serious charges such as robbery, assault, and burglary. Authorities have launched an intense manhunt to recapture the fugitives, urging the public to assist with information.
Inspector Phiri reportedly fled the station after the incident but was later arrested. While he has not commented publicly on the matter, the Zambia Police Service has strongly condemned his actions. “Such behavior is unacceptable and undermines public trust. Decisive action will be taken against any officer who abuses their authority or acts contrary to the law,” the police statement read.
The jailbreak has sparked widespread debate, with many Zambians expressing disbelief and outrage. Lawyer and former presidential spokesperson Dickson Jere weighed in on social media, describing the incident as “borderline comical” but reflective of deeper systemic issues. He also recalled a similar case from 1997, highlighting that such events are not without precedent.

The search for the escapees continues, this incident has become a talking point across Zambia, drawing attention to the challenges of maintaining order and accountability within the police force. The coming days will likely reveal more details about what led to this extraordinary lapse in judgment and its consequences for those involved.
