Ghana President Survives Crash, Driver Dead, Others Injured

The unfortunate incident led to the loss of Mr. Kwesi Atta, one of the convoy drivers. Furthermore, numerous close protection officers and police personnel from the President's security team sustained injuries of varying degrees.

Tragedy struck on Sunday, 19th May 2024, as several vehicles from the convoy of Ghana’s  President were engaged in a fatal accident along the Bunso-Akyem Asafo section of the Accra-Kumasi Highway.

The convoy was returning from Kumasi after accompanying the President to various events over the weekend.

The Presidency has reassured the public about President Akufo-Addo’s safety and well-being after a convoy accident.

The unfortunate incident led to the loss of Mr. Kwesi Atta, one of the convoy drivers. Furthermore, numerous close protection officers and police personnel from the President’s security team sustained injuries of varying degrees.

They were promptly treated at the Suhum Government Hospital and are currently being transferred to the University of Ghana Medical Centre for further care and observation.

The collision resulted in severe damage to several vehicles in the convoy. Fortunately, President Akuffo Addo,was unharmed as he had already traveled to Accra via military aircraft.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family of the deceased driver, and we extend our wishes for a swift recovery to the injured officers. As the situation is being evaluated, additional information will be shared.

In a statement released on Sunday, May 19, signed by Communications Director Eugene Arhin, it was clarified that President Akufo-Addo was not present during the accident.

The statement also mentioned that the President had flown back to Accra from the funeral of the late Deputy Finance Minister, John Kumah. “Thankfully, the President is safe and unharmed, having returned to Accra via military aircraft.

” The incident occurred in Bunso on Sunday, May 19, as the convoy was returning from Kumasi after accompanying the President to various events over the weekend.

Reports indicate that the crash occurred when a KIA Rhino truck crossed paths with the vehicle. Videos circulating on social media show the severely damaged Toyota on the roadside, with security personnel present at the scene.
