Renowned Tanzanian actress Grace Mapunda, popularly known as ‘Tesa,’ passed away in the early hours of November 2, 2024, while receiving treatment in the intensive care unit at Mwananyamala Hospital in Dar es Salaam.
Her death comes after a prolonged illness, marking the end of a career beloved by fans and respected by colleagues in Tanzania’s film industry.
According to Chiki Mchoma, Chairman of the Tanzania Actors Association, Grace had previously struggled with a health condition that had caused concern. After a period of recovery, she had resumed her normal life and professional activities. However, her health took a turn for the worse, leading to her hospitalization two days ago. Despite efforts to stabilize her condition in the ICU, Grace’s life came to a close early this morning.
“Grace was admitted to Mwananyamala Hospital due to illness, and sadly, she passed away while in the intensive care unit. Despite medical efforts, her condition deteriorated,” shared Mchoma.
Jacob Stephane, known as ‘JB,’ another prominent actor and colleague of Grace, expressed his sorrow and fond memories of working with her. He highlighted her unique talent and vibrant personality that endeared her to both her peers and her audience.
“Grace was among the finest actresses in our industry. Her humor and dedication were remarkable. I saw her for the last time yesterday at the hospital, but we couldn’t speak as she was in ICU,” JB reminisced.
Tesa’s contributions to Tanzanian cinema have left an indelible mark, particularly among younger actors who looked up to her as a role model.
