In a remarkable achievement, the Ministry of Minerals in Tanzania has set a new record for revenue collection, marking a significant milestone for the sector. Just within two months of the financial year 2024/2025, the ministry has collected an impressive TZS 196 billion—an amount that surpasses the total of TZS 161 billion collected during the entire financial year of 2015/2016.
On September 15, 2024, during a meeting with key stakeholders, including regional mining officers, directors, and managers, the Minister of Minerals, Hon. Anthony Mavunde, praised the officers for their tireless efforts in achieving this feat. The meeting, held in Tanga, was not just a celebration of this success but a strategic session aimed at further improving the mining sector.
Minister Mavunde’s words carried weight as he attributed the success to reforms in mining laws and regulations, which have helped curb the illegal smuggling of minerals and seal loopholes that previously led to revenue losses. “The continuous improvements in the mining laws, combined with innovative strategies for collection, have been key in reaching this milestone,” he said.

As the meeting progressed, the Minister reflected on the journey of the sector. “This achievement didn’t happen overnight,” he emphasized.
“It is a result of dedication, discipline, and creativity in ensuring that every ounce of mineral wealth contributes to our national coffers.”
In his closing remarks, he did not forget to recognize President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s role in prioritizing the mining sector by increasing the budget allocation for 2024/2025. Her support, along with the leadership of the regional mining officers, had been pivotal.
The meeting also provided an opportunity for Minister Mavunde to issue five directives to the regional mining officers, ensuring they stay on course. These included tightening security in mining areas and further strengthening revenue collection measures.
As the story of Tanzania’s mineral sector continues to unfold, it’s clear that through innovation and collaboration, the sector is poised for even greater achievements in the years to come.
