Muhimbili to Launch Pregnancy Transplant Service

Health Minister Ummy Mwalimu has announced that by the end of September 2024,

the National Hospital of Muhimbili will introduce a new pregnancy transplantation service aimed at increasing accessibility for Tanzanian women. This service, which represents a significant advancement in reproductive health care, is expected to make a substantial impact on many families across the country.

In a press briefing held in Dar es Salaam, Minister Ummy revealed that she has received an official letter from the hospital confirming the completion of preparations for the launch. However, she noted that there are still some adjustments needed, particularly regarding the cost of the service. “The process for the launch is well underway, and I have the official letter to proceed.

Yet, we must address a few details, especially concerning pricing. It is crucial that the costs in the public sector are reduced in comparison to those in the private sector,” she said.

The minister emphasized that high costs have been a major barrier for many women seeking fertility treatments. “We have seen that the high cost of these services has prevented many women from pursuing their desire to have more children. Although the service is nearly ready, we need to ensure that the financial burden on the public is lessened. We aim to create a clear distinction between the costs of the public and private sectors, providing some relief to those in need,” she added.

Ummy Mwalimu also highlighted the broader social implications of infertility. “Women who are unable to have children often face social stigma and discrimination. Our goal is to be part of the solution by making these essential services more affordable. While costs may still be a challenge for some, we hope to provide a more accessible option for those struggling with infertility,” she noted.
