Reports from South Africa indicate that former President Jacob Zuma has been expelled from his long-time party, the African National Congress (ANC), after supporting an opposition party in the parliamentary elections held in May this year.
Zuma was suspended from ANC membership in January after announcing his support for the Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) party, a new party that participated in the general elections for the first time this year. Zuma later became the leader and face of MK.

MK performed better than expected in the elections, securing about 15% of the vote. This was the main reason the ANC lost its majority for the first time since the era of apartheid.
“Former President Jacob Zuma has fully undermined the integrity of the ANC and campaigned to remove the ANC from power, while claiming that he has not breached party membership,” ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula told the media.
“This behavior is inconsistent with the spirit of organizational discipline and the constitution of the ANC.”
The ANC received 40.18% of the vote in that election, down from the 57.50% it secured in 2019, forcing it into a coalition government for the first time since it came to power at the end of white minority rule in 1994. MK is now the official opposition.
